On Wednesday, January 15th, we held an online information sharing session for MATSURI partners entitled "Lipid Extraction Process from Algal Biomass." Dr. Takumi Tabata, Principal BioEngineer at Chitose Laboratory Corp., gave a talk focusing on lipids contained in algae biomass and the current status and challenges of extraction process development. Among MATSURI partners, many participated, including those involved in application development, as well as those considering future uses for algal biomass and those hoping to gain a deeper understanding and apply it to their work.

In past information sharing sessions, we have touched on the topic of extraction as part of our presentations on algae production facilities, but this time we focused more on comparing the differences in component content and characteristics between algae species, the features and challenges of multiple extraction methods for recovering lipids from biomass (taking into account the characteristics), and the energy consumption involved in the entire process. He also shared the challenges that have been raised as preparations for the operation of extraction equipment at C4, a large-scale algae production facility currently in operation in Malaysia, are underway.

During the Q&A session, many questions were asked, exceeding the allotted time, about the characteristics of the algae species being handled and appropriate extraction methods for efficiently recovering lipids, indicating the high level of interest from the partner companies.

MATSURI will continue to hold information sharing sessions to share the progress and challenges in building the algae industry. With over 100 partner companies sharing their strengths and knowledge, we will move forward with the MATSURI project to build a bioeconomy society.
